Peri-urban areas are among the most climate-vulnerable spaces in Europe, where rapid urban expansion often outpaces sustainable planning. The PeriNEXT project addresses this challenge by strengthening vocational skills and interdisciplinary capacities for climate-oriented planning in peri-urban contexts, supporting the transition toward climate-neutral territories.
A strong European best practice is the Vauban district in Freiburg, Germany, widely recognized for its integrated approach combining renewable energy, low-carbon mobility and participatory urban governance. Research by the European Environment Agency highlights Vauban as an example of how integrated planning in urban-peripheral areas can significantly reduce emissions while enhancing social and environmental resilience.
Inspired by such practices, PeriNEXT focuses on equipping VET professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to translate climate policies into practical, scalable solutions for peri-urban areas where the green transition must truly begin. 💫
