Rethinking Peri-Urban Futures – SWOT Analysis for Türkiye

Rethinking Peri-Urban Futures: Insights from IGEA’s SWOT Analysis for TURKEY. At IGEA, we recently explored the dynamics of peri-urban areas through a comprehensive SWOT analysis as part of the PERINEXT Erasmus+ project.
These transition zones, where urban meets rural, are not just spaces of expansion, but laboratories for sustainable transformation.

🔍 What we see:

✅ Strengths
Rich natural resources and strong renewable energy potential
A young, adaptable population open to innovation
Growing awareness of sustainability and cooperative models
⚠️ Weaknesses
Unplanned urbanization and weak governance coordination
Social fragmentation and limited infrastructure
Brain drain and low environmental literacy
🚀 Opportunities
Alignment with the EU Green Deal & SDGs
Expansion of green jobs, circular economy, and VET-based skills
Digitalization and participatory governance models
⛔ Threats
Climate change, urban sprawl, and loss of agricultural land
Inequality and weakening social cohesion
Institutional inefficiencies slowing down transformation

Our takeaway:
Peri-urban areas hold immense potential, but only if development becomes inclusive, climate-resilient, and knowledge-driven.
At IGEA, we believe that combining innovation, education, and community participation is key to unlocking this transformation.

📢 This is just the beginning, more insights coming soon from different thematic areas (energy, mobility, social inclusion).
